Riverside Indoor Bowling

Swan Bowlers

For people with disabilities. The sport of Bowls can be played by almost anyone, with or without a disability. In recent years the development of specially designed wheelchairs and other equipment has made the game far more accessible for people with disabilities.

Swan Bowlers are a group of people who play friendly, competitive indoor bowls every Tuesday in sessions from 11.30 – 1.30 and 2.00 – 4.00pm.

Whether you are an existing bowler with a disability or if you have never tried bowls and have a disability, why not contact us and find out more.

We would love to hear from you and have a dedicated team of friendly volunteers who can provide tuition. Equipment can be borrowed and the first 3 sessions are free.

 Swan Bowlers

Lottery funding for the construction of Riverside Indoor Bowling Club RIBC in 1997 included the condition that opportunities would be made for people with a disability to enjoy bowling. The group started as part of the Winchester and District Sports Association for the Disabled but became independent in 2003 with its own constitution, committee and bank account. Initially wheelchair users had to bowl from one end on protective boards placed on the carpet but following fundraising, 3 Bradshaw Buggies were purchased which are specially adapted to be used on the green. A further two were obtained and are in regular use by some of the Swan bowlers. From 2000 a Regional Disability Sport England Day was held with singles competitions for Standing and Wheelchair bowlers. In 2011 this was changed to a popular annual independent Regional Pairs event and RIBC continues to provide the rinks free for that day. Swan Bowlers are supported by a group of volunteers mainly from Riverside Indoor Bowling Club whose valuable help enables them to continue to develop and enjoy their bowling.
